How to Choose Interior Door Hardware

When choosing your interior door design it is important to pay attention to every little detail, and that means – to choosing the right door hardware. Since most of us don’t deal with door hardware on a daily basis, I would like to clarify what we are going to talk about today. Interior door hardware generally consists of everything that you would use to hang and operate the door. It could be doorknobs, handles, hinges, locks and stops. Ideally, those parts of your door have to be both appealing and functional. Also, you can change door’s décor by simply complementing it with a new hardware style.

Locks and latches differ depending on the use and location of the door. There are commercial locks that are used in businesses that provide the highest grade security and durability, and there are also residential locks with acceptable level of security. Most common types of locks are mortise or cylindrical. The mortise type is more secure, but requires a rectangular cavity mortised into the door, while the cylindrical type – can be simply installed with the use of the drill.

Traditional Design

Modern Design

Depending on the style of your interior door you can choose to go with designer hardware or with a standard set. Traditional and contemporary designs characterized by intricate detail and flowing lines, while modern styles  are more bold and are specifically crafted by famous Italian artisans and designers. Choosing designer door handles and knobs will complement your house’s specific architectural style and vision.

Below we created a list of important tips to consider when choosing your door hardware:

Think about the way your door operates. You will need completely different set of hardware for swinging doors and sliding doors. Swinging doors (depending on their height and weight) generally operate on pivots or butt hinges, while sliding doors would need to be hung on tracks.

Lock Sets

Choose proper lock set. As mentioned above, the mortise models are more secure, but need to be installed in a pocket with the door; cylindrical units have better price but less secure. Some doors have a cutaway pocket already prepared for a mortise lock, for those that don’t – choose a cylindrical lock for easier installation. Also remember that not every door in the house needs to be locked, choose privacy non-keyed locks for your bedroom and bathroom. Privacy locks use push-button on the door knob instead of an actual key.

Choose trim options. There’s a variety of handles, doorknobs and levers models available on the market, choose the style that is complementing your door décor. Make sure it is easy to operate the trim, for example, choose handle over the doorknob for your kids’ room, as it may be easier for them to open.

Choose color and a finish. Most door hardware comes in standard colors and finishes, usually metallic brass, gold or chrome finish, but professionals like ITALdoors can help you personalize it. Once you’ve chosen the right color, move on to selecting between polished and brushed finish. Brushed finish is more practical, since it doesn’t scratch easily or show fingerprints.

Door Holder

Door Stopper

Consider stops and holders. In fact, swinging doors must be accompanied by door stops or holders to prevent wall and furniture damage. Simple door holders consist of hooks and magnets at the floor level, more complex models can be mortised into an actual door and frame. Door stops prevent the door from swinging and usually look like spring installed in the backside of the door. Door holders do the opposite – help to hold the door open and not close automatically.
