How to Choose Interior Door Colors?

Choosing door colors is an important part of interior design both for homes and businesses and often takes a lot more time than it seems. Correctly chosen door color will please the eye of you and your guests, while poorly chosen colors will most likely create disharmony. So how should you choose your interior door colors?

The general rule of thumb is to use your exterior coloring/trim and continue the look to your interior. People usually see the exterior of your home and have certain expectations in their mind about how the interior will look. Now that is a great idea when you have a house, but what about those of you who have an apartment, townhouse or a business location in mind?

The color of the door should be based on:

–         The room’s layout and attributes

–         The location of  the door

–         The door itself and

–         On your personal taste.

Even though some interior doors could make a strong decorative statement, it doesn’t mean they should visually jump off the walls. Some of them are meant to be left simple and blend in, while others – to be bold and catch attention.

For example, the door with a contrasting color to the wall, like bright purple or blue against white or cream wall color, will definitely attract a lot of attention, but visually will make the room smaller.

If you don’t have a lot of living space it might be a good idea to stick with light door colors – it will make your room look more bright and spacious.

If you have a door in an awkward place (for instance, at the end of the hallway or in the corner) paint it the same color as the walls – it will give it a sleeker, more seamless look.

For those of you who like minimalistic, but modern approach – pair white and black, or pale gray and tan colors in your door design.

ITALdoors-colorsIf you have a door with architectural details (raised panels or designs) it would be best to choose one that is one shade lighter or darker than the walls. Complex designed doors already stand out too much, so you do not want it to be too bright.

In case you are choosing the door for the room that has a wallpaper, let the colors of the wallpaper decide the which one is the best for the door. Use the darkest or the dominant color for the door itself and the lightest wallpaper color for the trim.

Go colorful and choose to have your doors painted in two different colors. When doing that, keep in mind that when the door is open you want to see a single color; choose the edges of the door to be the same color as the visible color. If the door is going to be open most of the time – make sure that the edges match with the colors of the wall and on the outside of the room. Generally, neutral colors such as white, tan, beige, and gray match with both dark and light walls.

Use your imagination and play not only with the colors, but with the materials and the finish of it. Great ideas might be using a chalkboard surface for the door in the kitchen, or a door that has a bookshelf for a living room area.

No matter what great idea you have in mind, ITALdoors’ team will be happy to assist you in making it a reality.
