Modern v. Contemporary Interior Design

There is a lot of controversy going on while choosing between modern or contemporary interior design. Many times those two definitions get confused or replaced by each other, that is why we decided to bring to your attention the main differences between the two.

Modern doesn’t necessary mean the latest. The word “modern” was first used for interior design definition in 1920’s – 1950’s and was related to a period of time, not to a specific style. Therefore, modern design is pretty much defined and will remain the same forever.

Contemporary design, on the other hand, is ever changing and usually is related to this specific moment in time. Contemporary design could be one thing today and a completely different concept in the next ten years.

There are, however, certain details that will help you to distinguish modern and contemporary interior design from each other. First of all, the term “modern” refers to “mid century modern” and can be recognized by use of natural materials like stone, wood, leather and an absence of ornament. Modern interior design uses open floor plans, minimal exterior expression, clean lines and an overall airy spacious feel. Materials often used in modern interior design would include steel (and other polished metals), concrete, glass and plastic. Modern design usually prefers white walls to create an illusion of having even more space and neutral colors in the detail of décor or just a hint of color.

Contemporary design by its definition means “existing, occurring, belonging to the same time”. Contemporary design is what is popular and used today, at this moment of time, and, therefore, can change throughout the time. This type of design can also be confusing, because it borrows details and pieces from other styles and even different eras. There are the details though that belong to contemporary interior design at the moment, for example, unique or even odd shapes in the interior paired with large windows, harmonious design that includes clean rounded lines and bold finishing details. Contemporary home’s main goal is to be comfortable, sustainable and a little bit futuristic. In contrast to modern interior design that generally follows a strict style format, contemporary design allows you to have more fun and be more creative. It is not rare for contemporary home to swing from one extreme to another, combine not combinable and stray away from popular in modern design neutrals in favor of brighter and bolder color. Important to know that in 10, 20 years from now – contemporary design might look completely different.
