How to Incorporate Doors into Interior Design

Doors are often considered a problem when decorating a room. But, that doesn’t have to be the case. Doors can make a bold design statement, or they can be concealed by creative methods to make them less conspicuous.

Painting doors the same color as the surrounding wall causes them to dissolve into obscurity. This is especially effective for doors with glass panels. This method gives the look of floating glass panels, as the door is not very visible at all.

For a wall-papered space, the door can be painted to become a bold part of the decor. Paint the interior panels of the door in the darker color in the wallpaper. Paint the door frame in the lighter color. This gives a bold, dramatic look, with the door taking center stage.

A soft neutral color such as gray or beige gives a dramatic look that is understated. Paint the door in a darker shade of the wall’s neutral color. This is especially effective for doors that have architectural interest.

For another bold look, paint the door in the same color as the wall but in a darker or lighter shade. Paint the trim in white or a very light color, and accent the interior panels of the door in the same color as the trim.

For a child’s room, family room, or a family kitchen, make the door useful and whimsical. Paint a solid door with chalkboard paint. Attach a container on the wall beside the door and fill it with colored chalks. The children can enjoy doing drawing and coloring.

Instead of trying to camouflage your doors by matching wall color or some such method, showcase them by painting the frames in a deep, rich color that contrasts with the wall color. If there are panels, outline the panel in the same color as the frame as an accent color.

A door can stand out in the decoration of the interior by painting it a rich black. Depending on the look you want, use either a high gloss enamel or a flat paint. The high gloss looks great in kitchens with the newest stainless appliances.

If wood grain is befitting the decor, play up the wood grain of the door. If it is still in its natural state, just stain it to show the wood grain and cover with a clear finish. If it has been painted, use one of the antiquing finishes to give a faux grain look.

A bright primary color door opening off of a neutral or dark color gives an entirely different look. A bright orange or yellow door opening off a deep brown or gray wall gives the appearance of opening into a sunshine filled hallway. The bright cheery color is welcome in the early morning when you have to drag out of bed. Awaken to the look of bright sunshine.

Whether you decide to showcase the door or hide it into the surrounding wall, make it an important part of your plan for your home interior. Don’t fret it as an eyesore, make good use of it.
